Wrestling tournament planning

Tools and guides for wrestling tournament organisers. From quick match count estimates to detailed planning guides for freestyle and Greco-Roman events.

Competition format

International wrestling governed by United World Wrestling (UWW) is contested in two Olympic disciplines: freestyle and Greco-Roman. Freestyle allows holds and attacks using all body parts; Greco-Roman restricts holds to the upper body with no leg attacks or grabs. Women compete in the freestyle discipline.

Both styles use single elimination with repechage. Athletes who lose to a finalist re-enter through the repechage bracket and compete for a bronze medal — two bronze medals are awarded at each weight category.

Senior and junior (U20) matches run two periods of three minutes each with a 30-second break. Cadet (U17) matches run two periods of two minutes. A fall — both shoulders held to the mat — ends the match immediately. Technical superiority also ends the bout early: a 10-point lead in freestyle, 8 points in Greco-Roman.
