Direct knockout. No second chances. Losers of semi-finals receive bronze.

Quarter-final repechage

IJF standard (Grand Slam, Worlds, Olympics). Athletes who lose in the quarter-final get a second chance to fight for bronze. Requires at least 8 entrants.

Double repechage

IJF standard (Continental Cups, Continental Championships). All athletes who lost to a semi-finalist — from any round — get a second chance. Requires at least 8 entrants.

Direct repechage (Full repechage)

All athletes who lose any main bracket match get a second chance, regardless of their opponent's performance. Also known as full repechage. Guarantees everyone at least 2 matches. Common at smaller competitions. Requires at least 8 entrants.

Round robin

Every athlete meets every other athlete once. Best for small groups (3–8). Placement determined by wins, then score difference. Requires at least 3 entrants.

Best of 3

A head-to-head series between exactly 2 athletes. First to win 2 bouts wins the series. Requires exactly 2 entrants.

Double pool

Athletes split into two pools for round-robin play, then the top finishers from each pool meet in gold and bronze finals. Best for 6–10 athletes.
